  • Mooring News: Northern Aruba, a Shark’s Escape, and Better Cruise Guarantees

October 21, 2026 | Reporting from Celebrity Silhouette off Portland, Maine

Ahoy, Sea-kers! Today I’m reporting from aboard Celebrity Silhouette off the coast of Portland, Maine. Our Caribbean cruise has acquired a New England accent, but we’re keeping our sense of humor firmly on board.

    Greetings From “Northern Aruba”

Our unexpected Portland stop has earned a new name: “Northern Aruba.” Apparently, the palm trees didn’t get the memo.

Our very own potty reporter, Mary, is helping document the detour. Between her reports and our photos, we’re collecting a few memories that certainly weren’t in the original itinerary. Sometimes cruising means trading the destination you expected for a story you couldn’t have planned.

    Bukangi Finally Checks Out

Good news from Busan, South Korea: Bukangi, the shark that spent more than a month in a canal, finally headed back to sea on October 21.

The third rescue attempt worked. Crews maneuvered a floating platform through the canal, using additional netting to discourage a return trip. The roughly 10-foot female dusky shark eventually swam out.

Apparently, even sharks occasionally need assistance finding the exit. (apnews.com)

Riviera Steps Up on River Cruise Disruptions

River levels can turn a dream itinerary into a very different vacation. Riviera Travel River Cruises is stepping up with a clearly stated Vacation Guarantee.

When significant changes are necessary before departure, affected travelers can:

    • Continue with the revised itinerary and receive a goodwill gesture, such as a future travel credit.

    • Move the same vacation to the following year at the original year’s price.

    • Cancel for a full refund processed within seven days.

That seven-day provision deserves attention. “Processed” is the key word; it isn’t a promise that the money will appear in your account that day.

Riviera says it monitors 52 river gauges daily, provides updates 14 and seven days before sailing, and makes personal contact no later than 72 hours before departure when changes are anticipated. If significant disruptions prevent it from delivering the expected experience, the company says it will cancel the departure.

Nobody controls the river, but clear choices certainly help travelers navigate the uncertainty. (cruiseindustrynews.com)

    Norwegian Bella Opens for Booking

Looking farther down the horizon, Norwegian Cruise Line opened bookings October 20 for Norwegian Bella.

Scheduled to debut in May 2028, Bella will sail seven-day Mediterranean cruises round trip from Barcelona. Announced destinations include Rome, Florence, Salerno, Marseille, and Palma de Mallorca.

The final ship in Norwegian’s Prima Class will accommodate 3,921 guests at double occupancy. Plans include the multilevel Ocean Heights activity area, waterslides, a ropes course, and expanded spaces for outdoor relaxation.

A Mediterranean itinerary and a brand-new ship? That’s enough to get the vacation-planning wheels turning. (nclhltd.com)

Until next time, keep your plans flexible and your sense of adventure packed!
