1. Bukangi outsmarts them again

Today’s second rescue attempt was suspended before Bukangi reached open water. Crews used a 50-meter net, boats and water-generated foam, but rising tide and the net snagging on the canal bottom stopped the operation. The shark came within roughly 50 meters of the final pedestrian bridge before officials secured the net and called it off.

Bukangi has now defeated boats, water cannons and a custom-built net. Busan’s honorary ambassador is apparently refusing reassignment. koreatimes.co.kr

2. Carnival Panorama’s cruise has become “Ensenada: The Sequel”

Hurricanes Polo and Rachel forced Carnival Panorama to cancel most of its eight-night Mexican Riviera itinerary. Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán and La Paz were dropped, leaving passengers with two separate visits to Ensenada before returning to Long Beach.

Carnival is providing $300 in onboard credit per stateroom. The changes were weather-related and made for safety, but passengers who booked a multiport Mexican Riviera cruise essentially received two helpings of Ensenada. That should generate some colorful passenger reactions. Cruise News

3. The juiciest phrase of the morning: “fresh wallets”

A report examining Carnival Jubilee’s move toward more four- and five-night Galveston cruises says the industry likes short sailings partly because passengers arrive with “fresh wallets.”

The theory is that drinks, excursions and other basics are prepaid, leaving guests more willing to spend on casinos, specialty dining, spas, shopping and arcades. Shorter cruises also reset the passenger population more frequently, creating a steady supply of newly boarded wallets.

In plain English: these quick getaways are not only attracting younger and first-time cruisers. They may generate more impulse spending per day. chron.com

The morning wires are still fairly light, so something larger may drop later today.
